In 1936, the Durkeeville Housing Authority was founded. Due to legal segregation known as Jim Crow, Black Americans were prohibited from living in many parts of Jacksonville, Florida.

The Durkeeville House Authority combined their efforts with the working and middle classes to create a safe, clean, modern, and beautiful neighborhood.

In 1937, the Durkeeville Housing Projects became one of the first federally funded developments in the state of Florida.

Today, the Durkeeville Oaks Housing Authority continues to provide affordable housing opportunities in Jacksonville's Durkeeville community on the northside of the city.
